SURGICAL TREATMENT

Surgical Treatment

In this kind of treatment, only the infected part is treated. It involves removal of bald portions of scalp, scalp lifts and flaps. The results are seen after sometime but after these kinds of treatments the benefits are permanent.
Some popular treatments are as follows:

i. Hair Transplant

A hair transplant is a procedure in which a plastic or dermatological surgeon moves hair to a bald area of the head. The surgeon usually moves hair from the back or side of the head to the front or top of the head. Hair transplants typically occur under local anaesthesia.

There are two types of transplant procedures:

1.Slit grafts and 2.Micrografts. Slit grafts contain 4 to 10 hairs per graft. Micro grafts contain 1 to 2 hairs per graft, depending on the amount of coverage needed

Two main techniques are used to obtain follicles for the Hair transplantation: FUT and FUE.

(FUT): Follicular Unit Transplantation
The surgeon will use a scalpel to cut out a strip of scalp skin from the back of the head. The incision is typically several inches long. This is then closed with stitches. The surgeon next separates the removed portion of scalp into small sections using a magnifying lens and sharp surgical knife. When implanted, these sections will help achieve natural-looking hair growth.

(FUE): Follicular Unit Extraction
In this procedure the hair follicles are cut out directly from the back of the head through hundreds to thousands of tiny punch incisions. The surgeon makes tiny holes with a blade or needle in the area of your scalp that’s receiving the hair transplant. They gently place hairs in these holes. During one treatment session, a surgeon may transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs. After, the graft, gauze, or bandages will cover your scalp for a few days. A hair transplant session can take four hours or more. Your stitches will be removed about 10 days after surgery.

ii. Low Level Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy also referred as Red light therapy and Cold laser therapy, this light irradiates photons into scalp tissues. These photons are absorbed by weak cells to encourage hair growth. It’s widely accepted that the procedure is safe, tolerable, and less invasive than hair transplant surgery.
It’s widely accepted that the procedure is safe, tolerable, and less invasive than hair transplant surgery. The theory of laser treatment for hair loss is that the low-dose laser treatments increase circulation and stimulation that encourages hair follicles to grow hair. Because the results of laser therapy are inconsistent, the conclusion of the medical community seems to be that it appears to work for some people, but not for others.

iii. Scalp reduction
Scalp reduction is a kind of surgery where your skin on the scalp is moved that has hair to cover your bald area. For example – skin from sides of your head can be pulled and stitched to cover your top of the head which is bald.

iv. Rotational flap surgery
It is a kind of reconstruction and in this tissue is rotated around to cover a defect. It creates a new defect while filling the existing one.

v. Tissue expansion
It is generally used for management of alopecia. It enables expanding normal scalp which has hair so as to cover the affected area.

vi. Hair cloning
It is actually a newly proposed technique and it is still emerging not a developed one. The basic process is to remove stem cells from the scalp and again culture them to produce hair.
